The Wayfarer in Divine Science

Notes from a journey in Christian Science

“Take no thought...” — Christ Jesus (Matthew 6 : 25)

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.” — Christ Jesus (Matthew 6 : 25)

I wondered about that “Take no thought” for many years, thinking that perhaps he meant that we should simply not think about any of that. But then, after studying Christian Science for a while, I realized that the world is always trying to give us thoughts — such as “you will die one day” or “this food will kill you” or “this drink will help you forget your pain for the moment” or “you have no place and purpose, and no one loves you” — and then I saw it: He is telling us to not take simply the worldly thoughts in without doing our best to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (I Thessalonians 5 : 21)

One of the very first things that Mary Baker Eddy tells us, on page vii of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is that “The time for thinkers has come.” Neither Mrs. Eddy nor Christ Jesus wanted or needed people blindly following them thoughtlessly. God did not make us to be mere drones or automatons; He made us in His image and likeness, according to Genesis 1 : 26.

God speaks to us constantly, and if we listen we will hear it. We feel it in inside us or even as it says in Isaiah 30 : 21 — “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” Either way, it does not come as the thought of the world comes, and the results will not be the same either.
