How to start spiritualizing thought
For myself, I first started with seeing how people go about having their thought be material. They might feel that a sense of fulfillment comes from the appearance of prosperity. A sense of place may be accomplished through the outward signs of a seemingly happy family and a circle of like-minded friends. Life may then become something you can “win” at by seeking material abundance and aesthetically pleasing surroundings and people. Love might be seen as simply one's personal preferences and how nice others think we are. And truth may be seen as entirely different for each individual, using our general sense of contentedness as a scorecard of sorts.
In contrast with this, Christian Science teaches us what God is, what the Christ is, and who and what we are (see 1,2, and 3 below). As we learn to pray correctly, be grateful for the good that is in and around us, and listen with our spiritual sense to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” 4 we start being useful to Him each day. From here, we will find the place He wants us to be — which may well be right where you are now — and through the constant expressing of Truth, Life, and Love as divine Mind directs 5 we will bring comfort and healing to all we meet.
Spiritualization of thought then becomes something practical that we are actually doing all day long: It is the mental, and sometimes verbal, refuting of what is presented to us materially. As we truly understand and live the statements of the Christ, Truth, that Christian Science gives us, our impersonal rebukes of error come through with the might of God to cut through the illusion of discord and return the situation to harmony and peace.
As with all things, we start slowly, and get better and more confident as we learn and understand more. No need to chastise yourself for taking time with Christian Science — let God guide your spiritual growth. Trust Him to reveal what is needed and bring inspiration as you are ready for it.

5 Be temperate in thought, word, and deed. Meekness and temperance are the jewels of Love, set in wisdom. Restrain untempered zeal. “Learn to labor and to wait.”
