The Wayfarer in Divine Science

Notes from a journey in Christian Science

An interpretation of The Ten Commandments — Exodus 20 : 1-17

The First Commandment

1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

I will not accept that there is a power, presence, mind, truth, love, principle, spirit, soul, or life other than the one God, good, that is the all-powerful and ever-present divine Mind, Truth, Love, Principle, Spirit, Soul, and Life.

The Second Commandment

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: ...

I will not hear truth in lies, see reality in illusion, feel love in hate, find home in matter, seek security in mortal mind, allow the glorification of error, or become personality’s embodiment. I am not the image and likeness of mortality nor the expression of wickedness.

The Third Commandment

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;

I will not ascribe personality traits, base emotions, or human foibles to God’s impersonal nature, nor accept them without rebuke. Handle all instances where God is said to be jealous, vengeful, etc. with scientific statements of Truth.

The Fourth Commandment

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

I will labour to obtain the understanding that God is Truth, Life, Love, Spirit, Soul, Principle and Mind; that I am the idea of God, good; that Christian Science, through Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, provides the key to spiritually interpreting The Bible, and therefore understanding my life in God; and once this understanding is gained, I will keep it holy and never let allow mortal mind to taint that purity.

The Fifth Commandment

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

I will gain the understanding that God is my Father and Mother, and to honor God is to express Mind in every thought, to be guided by Principle in every action, to manifest Spirit and Soul in your work, and to demonstrate Truth, Life, and Love in every moment. It is also seeing my human parents and human children in this light. Any contrary expression is honoring a false god, and dishonors your Father-Mother God.

The Sixth Commandment

13 Thou shalt not kill.

I will not accept death as an eventuality, or even a possibility, in my thoughts, words, or actions. God is Life, therefore death is a false god.

The Seventh Commandment

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

I will not succumb to the claims and suggestions of mortal mind, which seek to counterfeit Love, undermine Truth, negate Life, personify Soul, materialize Spirit, confuse Principle, and replace Mind with human intellect and the wisdom and Word of God with mortal mind’s so-called knowledge.

The Eighth Commandment

15 Thou shalt not steal.

I will not seek, accept, nor be grateful for any supply, but that which comes from God, good. Any other source of supply is illusion, as nothing exists outside of God. God’s supply comes only through honesty, and is always a blessing whether it comes to me or another.

The Ninth Commandment

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

I will not accept mortal mind’s lies — nor become its accusing voice — against any idea of God.

The Tenth Commandment

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

I will not see any supply or blessing that has come to my neighbor as originating anywhere but from God, good, the source of infinite supply and blessings for all.
